Kyrgyzstan has a history spanning a variety of cultures and empires. Although geographically isolated by its highly mountainous terrain, Kyrgyzstan has been at the crossroads of several great civilizations as part of the Silk Road and other commercial routes. Visitors can hike in the rugged Ala-Archa Canyon, bathe in the thermal springs and spas of Lake Issyk-Kul, photograph big cats, wild boar, ibex and bears, or stop over at Karakol with its famous apple orchards, Sunday markets and backstreets full of Russian gingerbread type houses. Bishkek, the capital, is named after a churn used to make fermented mare’s milk.
