Ethiopia, Djibouti and Eritrea are sadly avoided by many tourists but have a culture and history that should not be left unexplored.
Ethiopia is rich in history, wildlife and cultural traditions that deserve the fame of Egypt. Ethiopia is a rugged, landlocked country split by the Great Rift Valley. With archaeological finds dating back more than 3 million years, it’s a place of ancient culture. Among its important sites are Lalibela with its rock-cut Christian churches from the 12th–13th centuries. The landscape is littered with rock-hewn churches, mighty castles and isolated monasteries. Nature lovers come away with memories of waterfalls, mountains and wildlife.
Djibouti is a blend of African, Arab, Indian and European influences. Djibouti City is a minor port on the Red Sea. On the streets you can see traditionally robed tribesmen, hennaed women, camels and French Legionnaires. Away from the coast, the hinterland is a bizarre treat of weird lunar landscapes and vast salt lakes.
Eritrea is a tiny country with a strong sense of identity sitting on the horn of Africa. Torrid deserts, fertile highlands and arid plains are all part of Eritrea which was a colony of Italy for more than 50 years, evidence can still be seen in the magnificent architecture of the capital, Asmara.
