Finland is a vast expanse of forests and lakes punctuated by small towns. During the months of the midnight sun, coastal regions are a sailing and fishing paradise. Finland’s capital, Helsinki, occupies a peninsula and surrounding islands in the Baltic Sea. Helsinki is home to the 18th-century sea fortress Suomenlinna, the fashionable Design District and diverse museums. Lapland is Finland’s northernmost region, a sparsely populated area. It’s known for its vast subarctic wilderness, ski resorts and natural phenomena including the midnight sun and the Northern Lights and is the homeland of the indigenous Sami people. Rovaniemi is the gateway to the region and said to be the home town of Santa Clause.
The Åland Islands, or Åland, is an autonomous region of Finland. Comprising around 6,700 islands, this Swedish-speaking archipelago is in the Baltic Sea. The capital, Mariehamn, on the main island of Fasta Åland, is known for its beaches and streets lined with 19th-century wooden townhouses, handicraft shops and cafes.
