Maldives is a small Islamic nation of fishing and trading people which has a history, culture and language of its own dating back 2,500 years. With a population of less than 500,000 people, one third live in the capital Malé. Maldives is made up of 1192 tiny islands located on the equator, most measuring only a few kilometres and sitting barely a few metres above sea level. Visitors can enjoy pristine, tropical islands with swaying palm trees, white sand beaches and turquoise lagoons. Scuba divers can see whale sharks, sea turtles, mantas and morays, nurse sharks, hammerheads and rays.
